My Week

I would like to start this blog entry by thanking all of the Comm students who decided it would be best to come to school while they were sick so as to share all of their lovely germs.  Thanks to you I spent the majority of this past week home in my bed.  It’s ok, I forgive you.
Anyway, this week has been kind of a drag.  I am always feeling that I am not doing enough.  I did not get to help with the bake sale because I was sick, I never know what is going on with the movie night committee I’m on, and I wish that I could help more with the city trip.  Missing three days this week really put me out of the loop.  I had no idea that kids have been turning in money for the city trip or that there is a flag football game planned for the near future. I missed a meeting for the show I am supposed to be working on and now I am not sure I’ll have a job.  I am trying really hard to get involved because I love this program and all of its activities but I am falling behind.

High School Inventors

While reading the brief profile of each young inventor I was most impressed by the youth that are concerned with the environment.  Chaimaa Makoudi found a way to harness solar power in a way that generates more electricity than conventional solar panels.  Nevin Daniel designed a bioreactor that can transform seaweed into hydrogen and then into a type of fuel.  This just blew my mind! It is usually hard to find high school students that are highly motivated, yet here these kids are changing the world.
If you Google any of the kid’s names mentioned in this article you’ll come across numerous other articles discussing their many achievements and awards.  Take for example Nikita Khlystov.  Not only has Nikita worked on designing brake petals for the Duke University motor-racing team, he has led the design on a magnetic solar sail.  When I typed Nikita’s name into Google I realized that he was one of the first high school students to be inducted into Sigma Xi which is a scientific research society.  Such societies are often found at universities, research centers, and government laboratories.
These young inventors are really making a difference in the world and I find that inspiring.  Age does not always matter.

TV Will Save the World!!!

Did you know that in a lot of places, TV is the next big thing? I did not, but now I do.  This short yet powerful article on the global impact television is making was quite interesting.  Here in the U.S.A not having a TV in the home seems like a novel idea.  Television has played a pivotal role in American culture for years.  It was interesting for me to read about how in other places television is just beginning its rise.  By the time students my age and younger are working in the field, television will be reaching a great number of people.  This article shows how things are rapidly changing in the world of entertainment.
I found the embeded video really interesting.  Although the video deals more with movies and music than it does with televsion, it still shows the impact entertainment is having around the world.  When I would think of different places that are known for their impact on the world of entertainment, Nigeria was not at the top of the list.  After watching this video, however, I see the role that film and music play on a global scale.  Nigeria is trying to make a name for itself in the entertainment industry and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for those involved in the efforts.

Busy Week Number Two

This week is finally over! My classes are interesting, don’t get me wrong, it is just that this week has been crazy busy. I am trying really hard to budget my time and balance going to classes, going to work, completing my homework and attempting to have a social life. Let me tell you, this is way easier said than done. I’m either racing from school to work, or from work to school.

This week in Comm140 was the first time since June that I was able to get back to working in Adobe Premiere. I had really missed working with the program. The class can get a little dull sometimes because most my fellow students are not familiar with the program so it takes us a while to get through the assignments, but I look forward to diving into my future projects.
I am glad that the weekend has finally arrived and that my boss allowed me to have today off. I have spent most of today (Saturday) being shamefully lazy, and tonight I plan on spending some time with friends. My friends and I have really gotten into swing dancing this past year or two so I look forward to doing that later tonight.
Overall the week has been crazy yet enjoyable. I believe that I am beginning to find my place here at school. I am making friends and I am getting more involved with media club. The weeks to come should be exciting.

Fall Sweeps Craziness!

Coming this fall to ABC is a brand new show called My Generation. This show is shot in the style of a documentary and follows different types of individuals 10 years after going to high school in the year 2000. This new program looks interesting and I would love to watch My Generation as it begins its first season but unfortunately this new show airs at the same time as both The Big Bang Theory on CBS and 30 Rock on NBC. Both of these shows have a huge following and will pretty much deter all attention away from My Generation. I suppose that people could record My Generation and watch it after viewing the latest episodes of their favorite shows on the other major networks, but I just do not see ABC’s new television program generating enough interest.

A second new show being introduced to TV viewers this fall is CBS’s Blue Bloods. This new drama follows an Irish family of law enforcers. The cast is lead by Tom Selleck in the role of the father with other stars such as Donnie Wahlberg playing is detective son. The major reason I believe this show has a shot at making it is because of its writers/producers. Mitch Burgess and Robin Green are the Emmy winning writers and producers of The Sopranos. I think that fans of the Sopranos will be very interested to see what this writing/producing team has in store for viewers. Blue Bloods has a very good chance of establishing a decent fan base.

Week 1: My First Crazy Week

I am proud to say that I have survived my first full week of college. Although each day brings different challenges, I find myself adapting quickly to my new routine.
One of my favorite things about college is the opportunity I have to meet and work with people who share the same interests as me. I love the different types of personalities I am surrounded by every day. I have to say that I am really appreciatve to the second year students and teacher’s assistants for their help in the studio, for any advice they have offered, for... interesting experiences during lunch, and for making me feel so welcome to the program
I am loving everything I am learning in the studio and in the classroom. Overall, I am having fun and I am looking forward to the rest of the semester… even if it means having class with Carlos.
