Who I Am

As seen in the large print blog title, my name is Shelby Murphy. In junior and senior high my friends called me Smurph, so feel free to use the nickname.

In June 2010 I graduated from Dryden High School. For those of you who do not already know, Dryden Junior/Senior High School is the indiscreet brick building across the street from Tompkins Cortland  Community College. Despite the fact that I did not leave town for college I am very excited to be a student at TC3 this year. I am majoring in Broadcast Production with a concentration in television and so far I love it. I’m starting to realize that Broadcast Production is not a real popular major amongst girls but this fact just encourages me to work harder to prove that I deserve to be here just as much as the boys do. In high school I took a video production class for the first half of my Junior year. I ended up enjoying the course enough to take on the advanced version of the class. My passion for film and editing became so strong that I asked to take the course for another semester as an independent study. In the year and a half I have been involved with video production I have won both an honorable mention and an award for editing in a state film competition. This is what I do. This is what I love.
In other interests, I love art and music. I spent every year of high school in the art rooms taking advantage of the free supplies. Whether it be drawing, painting, film, or photography, I love the world of art.
Another passion of mine is performing. There is something about getting up on stage and singing your heart out to a room full of people that gives me a rush like nothing else can.
To make things interesting, here are some random facts about me. My friends and I really enjoy swing dancing in our spare time. I am the middle child with an older brother and younger sister. I was born in Toms River, New Jersey where I lived for the first nine years of my life. My favorite color is yellow. I have seen every episode of the television series M.A.S.H. My parents decided on my name while watching an episode of Star Trek the Next Generation, and I too am some-what of a “Trekkie”.
That is pretty much Shelby Murphy in a nutshell. I look forward to future posts and my future experiences with Comm100.
